LASTMA Deploys Drones to Monitor Traffic in Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has introduced drone technology to boost traffic monitoring and security surveillance across the state.

The innovation marks a shift from manual enforcement to digital intelligence systems.

Speaking at the launch, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the drones will provide real-time aerial coverage of major traffic corridors, enabling quicker responses to congestion, accidents, and emergencies.

“This initiative is not just about equipment but about redefining traffic management through digital governance. With real-time aerial oversight, we can intervene faster, enhance safety, improve emergency coordination, strengthen security, and encourage disciplined driving,” he stated.

Bakare-Oki explained that the drones will conduct aerial reconnaissance and high-definition monitoring, allowing officers to act proactively instead of relying only on ground patrols.

He stressed that deployment will follow strict ethical and regulatory standards. “We assure Lagosians that the use of drones will comply with privacy safeguards and legal requirements, ensuring transparency and integrity,” he added.

According to the agency, the new system will complement LASTMA’s toll-free hotline, making emergency response and accident management faster. Authorities said the move is part of wider efforts to ease traffic, cut travel time, reduce accidents, and instill discipline on Lagos roads.
