The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a one-week ultimatum to activist Omoyele Sowore, demanding that he retract an alleged disparaging post against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and tender a public apology.
In a letter dated September 7, 2025, and signed by Uwem Davis on behalf of the Director-General, the DSS said Sowore’s remarks on his verified X handle had offended many Nigerians, particularly the President’s supporters, and were capable of inciting unrest.

The agency accused Sowore of using “false and malicious” words that could cause disunity and a breakdown of law and order.
The DSS directed Sowore to:
- Publish an unequivocal retraction on the same platform.
- Issue a public apology in at least two national dailies and two television stations.
- Send a written representation to the DSS headquarters in Abuja within one week.

According to the letter, Sowore’s August 26, 2025, post describing the president as a “criminal” who lied about corruption had “lowered the standing and respect of Mr President before citizens and the international community.”
The DSS warned that failure to comply would prompt it to “initiate measures it deems most appropriate within the ambit of the law.”
The letter was also copied to the United States Embassy in Abuja for its information.
