The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has renewed its commitment to fully implement President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Executive Order on Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII).
This order classifies telecommunications facilities as key national assets that need strong protection.
This development comes after a successful intervention by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) in collaboration with the NCC. Together, they helped suspend a planned strike by the Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria (NOGASA).
If carried out, the strike would have disrupted diesel supply to telecom sites nationwide, crippling network operators’ generators and affecting connectivity.
In the days before the resolution, ONSA, led by National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, engaged NOGASA’s leadership.
Meanwhile, the NCC offered technical and regulatory guidance, stressing the security, economic, and social risks of telecom disruptions. As a result, the strike was called off, preventing potential nationwide network outages.
“Telecommunications infrastructure forms the backbone of our connectivity and digital economy. Any disruption through vandalism, accidental damage, theft, denied access to maintenance teams, or supply interruptions—affects service delivery, economic stability, and national security,” the NSA said.
NCC Commits to Stakeholder Collaboration
The NCC thanked ONSA for its leadership and commended stakeholders for recognising telecom services’ national importance. Executive Vice Chairman and CEO Dr Aminu Maida highlighted the Commission’s focus on enforcing technical standards and raising awareness about protecting infrastructure.
He added, “This resolution shows that dialogue is key to preventing service disruptions. We urge all Nigerians to treat telecom infrastructure as a shared national asset. It supports communication, business, healthcare, education, and participation in the global digital economy.”
