The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted widespread thunderstorms and rainfall across the country from Monday through Wednesday.
In its three-day weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet forecast early morning thunderstorms over parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Taraba, Adamawa, and Kaduna States, while the rest of the northern region would experience sunny skies with cloud patches.
Northern States to Experience Afternoon Thunderstorms
Afternoon and evening thunderstorms with rain are expected in several northern states including Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Kano, Katsina, Gombe, and Kaduna.
For the central region, morning thunderstorms are anticipated in Niger, Plateau, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), while other areas remain partly cloudy. Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms are likely in Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, and other parts of the region.
Light Rain and Thunderstorms for the South
The southern region will see cloudy skies with chances of morning light rain in Ogun, Lagos, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom, followed by afternoon and evening thunderstorms in states such as Ondo, Oyo, Anambra, Abia, and Rivers.
By Tuesday, most of the North will remain sunny with intermittent thunderstorms in parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, and Kaduna. The central and southern regions are also expected to experience light to moderate rain.
Wednesday Forecast: Heavy Rain in Northern States
On Wednesday, thunderstorms are forecast over much of the North, with heavy rains likely in Borno, Kano, Katsina, Bauchi, and Taraba. The central region will see afternoon thunderstorms, while light rain is expected across the southern region throughout the day.
NiMet warned that strong winds may precede thunderstorms and urged the public to secure loose objects, avoid driving in heavy rain, and disconnect electrical appliances during storms.
The agency also advised residents to avoid sheltering under tall trees and called on airline operators to obtain detailed, location-specific forecasts for safe flight planning.
