Nigeria’s impressive 12-match unbeaten run came to an end on Wednesday after a 2–1 defeat to Portugal in an international friendly. The encounter was tightly contested for long spells before the hosts broke the deadlock late in the game, only for the Super Eagles to briefly fight back.
Both sides struggled to find clear openings in a balanced first half and much of the second period, with defences holding firm. Portugal eventually took the lead in the 74th minute through Pedro Neto, putting Nigeria under pressure in the closing stages.
Nigeria responded eight minutes later when Akor Adams restored parity in the 82nd minute. The striker finished calmly from close range after being set up by Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, reigniting hopes of extending the unbeaten streak.
Late Winner Seals Portugal Victory
Just as the game appeared to be heading for a draw, Portugal struck again.
Juventus winger Francisco Conceição produced a decisive moment, beating Zaidu Sanusi before curling a fine left-footed effort into the far corner to restore the lead and seal the win.
Nigeria pushed for another equaliser in the final minutes but could not break through as Portugal held on.

The result marks Nigeria’s first defeat in 12 games, ending a run that spanned both competitive and friendly fixtures.
Despite the loss, the match carried a historic personal highlight for Alex Iwobi, who earned his 100th Super Eagles cap, becoming only the fourth Nigerian to reach the milestone.
The win boosts Portugal’s confidence as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they are drawn in Group K alongside DR Congo, Uzbekistan and Colombia.
