Egypt friendly a valuable test, Super Eagles must focus on AFCON – Awaziem

Chidozie Awaziem says the Super Eagles must learn from their 2–1 friendly defeat to Egypt and shift their focus to AFCON 2025.

The match, played at the Cairo International Stadium on Tuesday night, saw Mahmoud Sabre and Mostafa Mohammed score for Egypt, while Awaziem headed in Nigeria’s lone goal late in the first half.

The Nantes defender described the encounter as a crucial test for the team.

“It was a good test for us. Egypt are not easy to play against; they have quality players. The friendly allowed us to test ourselves before AFCON, try new players and tactics, and prepare effectively,” Awaziem told the Super Eagles media team.

Reflecting on the team’s performance, Awaziem added:

“Though the result wasn’t what we wanted, the match helped us assess our structure and evaluate the contribution of newly invited players. We dominated parts of the game and created many scoring opportunities.

The coach has seen what he needed to see. Now, we take the positives and move forward to AFCON.”

Awaziem’s remarks underline the team’s determination to learn from the friendly and approach the continental tournament with renewed focus.
