Former Barcelona winger Emmanuel Amunike has backed Nigeria to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, highlighting striker Victor Osimhen as the key leader for the Super Eagles.
The 55-year-old Amunike, who played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s 1994 AFCON-winning team, believes that Osimhen’s leadership qualities will be crucial in the quest for a fourth continental title.
“When I look at Victor Osimhen, the same leadership he shows now is what he has demonstrated over the years,” Amunike told Victor Modo. “I’d love to see Osimhen lift the AFCON trophy with his teammates, but they have to earn it by fighting, not just talking.”
Amunike’s backing comes at a time when Nigeria is preparing to build on their near-miss in the 2023 tournament held in Ivory Coast.
The Super Eagles, under the guidance of former coach Jose Peseiro, finished as runners-up after a heart-wrenching 2-1 loss to the host nation in the final. The defeat left the team, as well as fans, with a bitter taste, but it also provided valuable lessons and insights for the future.
The 55-year-old urged the team, coached by Eric Chelle, to focus on strong performances on the pitch rather than relying on words.
