We Are Not in Senate to Get Rich – Akpabio

By Rafiyat Sadiq

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said that lawmakers are not in the Senate to make money but to serve the country and help future generations.

He said this during a debate on a new bill to change the Electricity Act of 2023. The bill is meant to fix problems in Nigeria’s electricity sector. It aims to improve how the power sector is run, protect electricity infrastructure, and make sure there is better cooperation between the federal and state governments.

The bill was brought forward by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who leads the Senate Committee on Power.

Akpabio said that without stable electricity, Nigeria cannot grow its industries. He also said that many people wrongly believe that senators are only there to make money.

The bill passed its second reading and has been sent to the Committee on Power for more work. The committee will report back in six weeks.

Senator Abaribe said the bill also seeks to stop vandalism of electricity equipment, help state governments take over some electricity matters, and support poor Nigerians through a new way of giving electricity subsidies.

The bill also wants to make rules clearer for how power companies deal with local communities and fix confusing parts of the current law.
