The Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, has dismissed reports suggesting that he plans to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) or the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
During an interview on Politics Today, aired on Channels Television Wednesday night, Lawal described the claims as baseless. He said he remains a loyal PDP member and has no plans to join another party.
He said, “First of all, I’m glad you called it a rumour. Yes, some parties have approached me, but I am a card-carrying member of the PDP. I am not going anywhere.”
Lawal also pushed back against claims that he is seeking protection from the ruling APC to shield himself from opposition pressure in the state. He said he faced the same political forces in 2023 and defeated them at the polls.

“All the opposition forces were present in 2023, and I defeated them. Why should I be afraid of them now?” he asked.
He specifically mentioned former governors Sani Yerima and Bello Matawalle, saying he is confident of defeating them again in the 2027 general elections.
On the internal crisis in the PDP, Governor Lawal admitted there are challenges but noted that efforts are underway to restore unity.
“The PDP has issues, no doubt,” he said. “But we are working to resolve them. It’s just a matter of time before things settle.”
When asked about his relationship with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Lawal said they maintain a cordial relationship despite being in different political camps.
“I have a very good relationship with the president, but we belong to different parties,” he said.
