PDP chieftain Dan Ulasi backs pledge, calls Obi an honest politician

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has restated his commitment to serve only one term if elected president in 2027, insisting that four years is sufficient to make a meaningful impact if governance is driven by genuine service.
In a statement on his official X handle on Tuesday, the former Anambra State governor said he found it surprising that his pledge had generated widespread debate. He maintained that a sincere leader could achieve significant progress within a single four-year term.
“I still find it baffling that my decision to do a term of four years, if given the mandate to rule this country, is generating so much agitation,” Obi said. “By this feeling, we are doubting the fact that a sincere leader can achieve much in 48 months.”

Rejects Desperation in Politics
Obi stressed that his political ambition was not driven by desperation, adding that he had never engaged in electoral malpractice, thuggery, or ballot box snatching. He challenged anyone to investigate his political history.
He argued that within four years, a committed government could confront corruption, redirect resources to priority areas, uphold the rule of law, and ensure credible elections.
He criticised wasteful government spending, citing funds used for presidential jets as money that could have been channelled into education, healthcare, or infrastructure.
Ulasi: Obi’s Word Can Be Trusted
Meanwhile, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dan Ulasi, has backed Obi’s one-term pledge. Speaking on Arise Television, Ulasi described Obi as an honest politician whose word should be trusted.
“I believe Peter Obi’s words are sincere. Unlike the usual crop of politicians in Nigeria, he is honest,” Ulasi said. “The constitution guarantees only a four-year term, which can be renewed by the people. Obi has not said anything out of the ordinary; he believes he can accomplish a great deal in those four years.”
