President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the creation of a special Armed Forces Welfare Fund, committing all salaries earned since assuming office as the seed capital.
The president made the announcement on Saturday as part of activities marking his 74th birthday.
Tinubu said the initiative is aimed at strengthening support for military personnel, injured soldiers and families of those who died in service.
In a statement to commemorate his birthday, the president, who is also commander-in-chief of the armed forces, praised members of the military for their sacrifices in defending the country.
He described them as dedicated men and women who continue to put their lives on the line to protect Nigeria.
Support for Troops and Families
The president directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to open a dedicated account for the fund.
According to him, the initiative will provide support for serving personnel, soldiers wounded in the line of duty, and families of fallen officers, including spouses and children.
The fund will also cater to personnel who have sustained life-changing injuries, as well as dependants of those who died in active service.

Tinubu said all his salaries since he assumed office would be paid into the fund as the initial contribution.
He noted that the initiative is separate from existing welfare packages and insurance schemes available to members of the armed forces.
Appeal for Wider Support
The president called on state governors, members of the national assembly, private sector leaders and other Nigerians to support the fund once details of the account are released.
He said supporting the military and their families should be regarded as a collective national responsibility.
Further details on the management of the fund and how contributions will be made are expected to be announced by the relevant authorities.
