Senator Victor Umeh, who represents Anambra Central, has defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
His defection was formally announced in a letter read on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday, May 5, by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Umeh said the decision followed wide consultations with his family, constituents, and political associates.
He attributed his exit from the ADC to persistent internal divisions and leadership disputes within the party.
According to him, the unresolved crisis in the party made it difficult to continue, prompting his move to a new political platform where he hopes to contribute more effectively to national development.

“I have taken this decision after wide consultations… in view of the lingering divisions in the leadership,” he said, adding that he remains committed to serving the country under the NDC.
The development comes barely two months after Umeh, alongside eight other senators, joined the ADC on March 12, a move that had briefly strengthened the party’s presence in the Senate.
Umeh, 63, is a former national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and remains a notable figure in Nigeria’s political landscape.
