Senate Minority Whip, Tony Nwoye, has defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).
The defection was announced during Wednesday’s plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who directed the Clerk of the Senate to update the chamber’s official records.
Nwoye Cites Internal Crisis in ADC
In a letter read on the floor of the Senate, Nwoye said his decision was influenced by the lingering internal crisis within the ADC, which he claimed had weakened the party’s structure and stability.

According to him, the party had been engulfed in divisions and multiple court cases that had negatively affected its cohesion and overall direction.
“I write to formally notify you of my resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and my intention to defect to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC),” the letter read.
“The decision has become necessary due to internal divisions and the ongoing multiple litigations at the Federal High Court and court judgments affecting the party, which unfortunately have impacted the cohesion and stability of the party.”
Move follows Obi, Kwankwaso’s exit
Nwoye’s defection comes amid a wave of exits from the ADC following the departure of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, and former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
The growing movement into the NDC has continued to reshape opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
