The Lagos State Government has dismissed claims that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been directed to step down over health concerns.

A report had alleged that President Bola Tinubu and influential figures in the state were unhappy with the current leadership and had begun moves to effect a transition.

Reacting on Monday, the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, said no such directive was issued and affirmed that the governor remains in good condition.

He described the report as false and misleading, insisting it was intended to deceive the public.

“This report is entirely untrue. Nobody has asked the Lagos Governor to resign. It is yet another piece of fake news,” the statement said.

“Governor Sanwo-Olu is in good health, mentally fit, and continues to carry out his responsibilities.”

Akosile added that the governor earlier received his deputy, Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, who paid a courtesy visit to inform him of his intention to run for governor.

He said the meeting was cordial and followed established tradition.

The government said it issued the clarification to prevent misinformation, noting that while such claims are often ignored, it was necessary to reassure residents.

Sanwo-Olu is serving his second term and is expected to leave office on May 29, 2027. He was first elected in 2019.

On Monday, he also endorsed Hamzat’s 2027 governorship ambition, describing him as the most suitable candidate.

The endorsement took place during a meeting with party leaders at the governor’s office in Alausa, Ikeja.
