PenCom, Police Forge Partnership to Boost Officers’ Pensions

The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has strengthened its engagement with the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to improve the welfare of officers under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

PenCom’s Director General, Ms Omolola Oloworaran, on Wednesday led a high-level delegation to Force Headquarters in Abuja for a strategic meeting with the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.

The talks, which also involved senior police officials and the management of NPF Pensions Limited, addressed pension-related concerns and explored reforms to improve retirement benefits.

Ms. Oloworaran acknowledged the sacrifices of police officers and emphasised that collaboration was crucial to strengthening, rather than abandoning, the CPS. She outlined proposed reforms, including:

  • A Health Insurance Scheme for retired officers.
  • Raising monthly pensions to 75% of final salary.
  • Expanding the Retirement Resettlement Fund.
  • Overhauling the police pension framework.

She further urged the federal government to increase its pension contribution for police personnel from 10% to 20% and disclosed plans for a new gratuity scheme to take effect in 2026, which will grant treasury-funded federal workers one year’s total emoluments at retirement.

In his response, IGP Egbetokun praised PenCom’s commitment and pledged the Force’s cooperation in resolving pension challenges. Both sides agreed to sustain dialogue and advance reforms to ensure that police officers retire with dignity and financial security.
