The Consulate General of Nigeria in Johannesburg has issued a safety advisory to Nigerian citizens residing in South Africa ahead of planned nationwide anti-foreigner protests scheduled for Monday, May 4, 2026.
In a statement released on Sunday and signed by the Consul General, Ambassador Ninikanwa Okey-Uche, the mission urged Nigerians to remain vigilant following intelligence reports of coordinated demonstrations across all nine provinces.
According to the consulate, anti-foreigner groups have been mobilising residents through widely circulated messages calling for a nationwide shutdown aimed at pressuring authorities to act against foreign nationals. The organisers reportedly claim that foreigners benefit disproportionately from the country’s resources and are demanding the removal of both documented and undocumented migrants.

The groups are also planning street marches to push for the exit of foreign nationals, raising concerns over potential unrest.
While protests are expected in several regions, the consulate noted that specific gathering points have not been confirmed in most cities. However, in Johannesburg, demonstrators are expected to converge at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., with a memorandum scheduled to be presented to authorities by noon.
Security concerns have also been raised over possible disruptions in major business hubs, including Pretoria, Cape Town, and Durban.
The consulate strongly advised Nigerians to exercise caution, avoid confrontation with protesters, and stay updated through local media. It also urged Nigerian business owners to consider temporarily shutting down operations during the protests, amid fears that foreign-owned establishments could be targeted.
