Presidential hopeful of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has vowed to tackle all forms of criminality if elected in 2027.
Obi made the pledge while describing the fuel subsidy regime as an organised crime against the country.
Speaking on Trust TV, the former Labour Party candidate said Nigeria’s fuel consumption figures do not add up when compared with countries of similar size.
“Subsidy is organised crime, and I will not tolerate any form of criminality as President of Nigeria. The volume of fuel said to be consumed in this country is unrealistic; there is empirical evidence,” he said.

He compared Nigeria with Pakistan, noting that despite having more roads and possibly more vehicles, Pakistan consumes far less fuel.
“We are about the same size as Pakistan. They have more roads and likely more vehicles, yet their fuel consumption is about a third of ours. So who is using the excess?” he asked.
During the 2023 presidential election, Obi and other candidates had pledged to remove fuel subsidy. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who won the poll, announced the immediate removal of the subsidy during his inauguration at Eagle Square, Abuja.
