NOA Sounds Alarm on Rising Suicide Cases in Nigeria

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has expressed deep concern over the growing incidence of suicidal behaviours among Nigerians.

Commemorating the 2025 World Suicide Prevention Day in Dutse, Jigawa State, NOA Director Ahmad Tijuana highlighted the urgent need to raise awareness and break the stigma surrounding suicide.

“The day aims to increase public understanding of suicidal behaviours, strengthen global commitment to action, and address mental health issues while reducing stigma,” Tijuana explained.

He stressed that suicide is preventable and emphasised the agency’s commitment to changing the narrative through education and awareness campaigns.

“Every year, more than 720,000 lives are lost globally to suicide, with each loss deeply affecting families and communities,” he said.

Tijuana encouraged Nigerians to check in on family, friends, and neighbours, noting that sometimes a simple question or conversation can save a life.

He urged people to listen patiently and without judgement while encouraging those struggling to seek professional help from doctors, counsellors, or hotlines.

“Use words that heal. Your kindness and care can bring hope. World Suicide Prevention Day is not only about remembrance but also about hope,” he said.
