Lagos Airport Launches Structured Slot System to Boost Terminal Efficiency in 2026

Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, Terminal Two (MMA2), will introduce a structured slot system in 2026 to better match flight demand with terminal capacity, Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL) announced.

Remi Jibodu, Head of Aeronautics and Cargo Services and Acting Chief Operating Officer, said the new framework will enhance aircraft movement coordination, reduce congestion during peak hours, improve on-time performance for airlines, and support better planning by ground handling companies.

“This initiative is part of our broader strategy to reinforce operational reliability, raise service standards, and ensure a consistent passenger experience during high-demand periods,” Jibodu explained. He added that insights from the recent peak season will guide efficiency-focused upgrades in 2026.

MMA2 recorded a successful year-end operational period, reflecting strong collaboration with airlines, ground handlers, and service providers. The terminal remained open beyond scheduled shutdown times to accommodate late-night and delayed flights, while routine maintenance ensured safety and infrastructure standards.

Jibodu noted that additional operational and ground support measures helped smooth passenger processing, streamline baggage handling, and minimize delays despite increased traffic. Reviewing year-end performance, he stressed that structured coordination among stakeholders is critical. The new slot system aligns with MMA2’s broader optimisation strategy and global best practices in apron and airside management.

Beyond aeronautical operations, MMA2 reported strong performance in non-aeronautical services. Kola Bamigboye, Acting COO and Head of Space and Premises Management, said 2025 saw innovation and improvements across retail, concessions, and passenger amenities. “Our goal is to deliver a convenient and engaging terminal environment. We are ready to sustain this momentum in 2026,” he said.

Security and passenger-support systems also improved, including enhanced CCTV infrastructure, which aided the recovery of lost items and earned positive passenger feedback. The terminal maintained an active customer experience email channel during the festive period, ensuring swift resolution of complaints.

As operations stabilise in the New Year, MMA2 plans to consolidate recent gains and deepen collaboration with airlines, ground handlers, regulators, and other service providers. BASL said these measures position MMA2 for a strong, coordinated operational year in 2026, reinforcing its status as a dependable aviation hub and a model for private-sector-led terminal management in Nigeria.
