ICPC, NEITI Deepen Partnership to Strengthen Extractive Sector Accountability

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthen collaboration with the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) to improve transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s extractive sector.

ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, made the remarks while receiving NEITI’s Executive Secretary and senior management at the ICPC headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.

Dr. Aliyu described the partnership as strategic and mutually respectful, emphasizing its importance in ensuring Nigeria’s natural resources are managed with integrity.

The ICPC Chairman said NEITI is a critical ally in fighting systemic corruption in the oil, gas, and mining sectors. He noted that NEITI’s audit reports provide data-driven insights that help identify revenue leakages and guide enforcement and preventive measures.

Areas for Expanded Cooperation

Dr. Aliyu outlined areas for deeper collaboration, including:

  • Real-time data exchange on illicit financial flows
  • Joint system reviews in the solid minerals sector
  • Training programmes for investigators and auditors

NEITI Seeks Preventive and Enforcement Support

NEITI Executive Secretary, Hon. Musa Sarkin Adar, said transparency alone is insufficient without strong preventive and accountability mechanisms, especially in high-risk sectors.

He emphasized that ICPC collaboration is key to turning NEITI reports into preventive action, enforcement, and monitoring, ahead of the 2026 EITI Validation exercise.

Hon. Sarkin Adar added that strengthening the partnership would reduce corruption risks, improve governance, and safeguard Nigeria’s extractive resources for sustainable development.
