Amnesty Raises the Alarms as Mob Violence Claims 23 Lives Across Nigeria

Amnesty International Nigeria has raised the alarm over the rising cases of mob violence in the country, revealing that at least 23 people have been killed in recent incidents across different states.

The organisation called on the Federal Government to take urgent and decisive action, warning that the trend reflects a dangerous breakdown of law and order and a growing disregard for the rule of law.

Speaking in Kano during the unveiling of a public awareness initiative under Amnesty International’s nationwide campaign against mob violence, the Country Director, Mr. Isah Sunusi, disclosed that the organisation has tracked no fewer than 155 cases of mob violence nationwide over the past decade, many of which resulted in deaths.

According to Sunusi, Amnesty’s most recent documentation shows that at least 23 people lost their lives after being attacked by mobs without any form of investigation or due process.

“In our report, we documented at least 23 cases of people who were killed as a result of mob violence across Nigeria,” he said.

He explained that victims are often accused of offences such as blasphemy, theft, or witchcraft, allegations that frequently trigger instant attacks and killings by mobs acting outside the law.

Describing the situation as alarming and unacceptable, Sunusi stressed that no society governed by the rule of law should tolerate extrajudicial killings. He urged authorities to hold perpetrators accountable, strengthen law enforcement responses, and ensure the protection of citizens’ fundamental rights.
