ActionAid, Amnesty Decry Police Brutality Against Peaceful Protesters in Abuja, Lagos

Human rights groups ActionAid Nigeria and Amnesty International have condemned the violent attacks on peaceful protesters and civic actors in Abuja and Lagos. They described the assaults as a grave violation of citizens’ rights and a threat to democracy.

The protests featured Yemi Adamolekun, Executive Director of Enough Is Enough (EiE) Nigeria, who laid flowers in memory of #EndSARS victims. However, security operatives reportedly disrupted the gathering and used excessive force against participants.

Andrew Mamedu, Country Director of ActionAid Nigeria, said the attacks represent a direct assault on freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.

“These incidents show a deliberate attempt to silence dissent,” he said. “Peaceful protest is the foundation of any democracy, and using force against unarmed citizens violates both Nigerian and international laws.”

Similarly, Isa Sanusi, Country Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, condemned what he called a recurring culture of brutality by security agencies.

“The government must launch an independent investigation into all reported assaults, including the attack on Yemi Adamolekun,” Sanusi said. “The pattern of repression against peaceful protesters is alarming. Authorities must stop using violence to silence citizens.”

Both organisations demanded accountability and urged the government to guarantee Nigerians’ right to free expression. They also called for strict adherence to human rights standards and rules of engagement by security operatives.

“Failure to act will be seen as complicity in the ongoing abuse of power,” the joint statement warned.
