Afro-Brazilians Celebrate Black Consciousness Day in Rio, Honouring History, Culture

The streets of Rio de Janeiro came alive on Thursday as Afro-Brazilians celebrated Black Consciousness Day, a national holiday recognising the history, resistance, and contributions of Afro-Brazilians.

Festivities included dancing, music, and the Tia Ciata procession, named after the early 20th-century cultural leader whose home became a hub for musicians shaping the foundations of samba. Tia Ciata’s influence bridged Afro-Brazilian religion and culture, cementing her legacy in Rio’s cultural identity.

Gracy Mary Moreira, Tia Ciata’s great-granddaughter, described the day as one of reflection and cultural exchange.

“November 20 represents a day of reflection, a day of resistance, of speaking about our culture, of exchanging knowledge. So this is a day when we celebrate our culture.”

Actor Marcelo Valentim, participating in the celebrations, reflected on the significance of the day, saying: “We are raised in the favela, we speak straight truth. They wanted me dead, I’m alive. They wanted me poor, I’m rich.”

The holiday commemorates the death of Zumbi dos Palmares, a leader who resisted the enslavement of Africans by Portuguese colonisers and became a symbol of African freedom in Brazil.

The annual celebration serves as both a remembrance of past struggles and a vibrant display of Afro-Brazilian culture and pride.
