ADC Faction Rejects Atiku’s Presidential Claim, Declares Chris Uba as 2027 Flag Bearer

A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by National Chairman Nafiu Bala Gombe, has dismissed claims that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, insisting that Professor Chris Uba is the duly nominated flag bearer.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Gombe said the party had concluded all internal nomination processes in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and the ADC Constitution.

He maintained that Atiku “is not, and has never been,” the party’s presidential candidate, stressing that only Chris Uba has been validly nominated to fly the party’s flag in the 2027 election.

ADC Rejects Coalition Claims

The party faction also distanced itself from a group operating under the leadership of former Senate President David Mark, claiming that it is an unauthorised faction with no constitutional or legal standing within the ADC.

According to Gombe, the group is not recognised by the party or the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and therefore lacks the authority to conduct congresses, organise primaries or make decisions on behalf of the party.

He said the ADC remained an independent political party and was not involved in any merger, coalition or alliance with any other political platform.

“The African Democratic Congress is not in any form of alliance, merger or coalition with any other political party. The ADC remains an autonomous, ideologically grounded and self-reliant political party committed to contesting all elections on its own merit, structure and manifesto,” he said.

Warning to Atiku

The party faction warned Atiku against presenting himself as the ADC’s presidential candidate, describing such actions as misleading and unacceptable.

It stated that the ADC would not serve as a political platform for individuals seeking to pursue personal ambitions outside the party’s established structures.

Gombe added that the party would explore all available legal and constitutional options to protect its identity and prevent what it described as unauthorised use of its name and platform.

Dismisses Alleged Plot Against Party

The ADC also dismissed allegations that there were plans to stop the party from participating in the 2027 general election.

It described the claims as unfounded and expressed confidence in INEC and Nigeria’s constitutional and electoral processes.

The party urged its members, supporters, stakeholders, security agencies and the general public to disregard statements issued by individuals or groups it described as unauthorised factions.

It further reaffirmed its readiness for the 2027 general elections, saying it would field candidates for all elective positions across the country.
