2027 Elections at Risk Without Urgent Reforms, CAPPA Warns Gov’t

Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has raised fresh concerns over Nigeria’s democratic future, warning that the credibility of the 2027 general elections could be undermined if urgent steps are not taken to strengthen institutions, tackle insecurity, and address worsening economic hardship.

In a statement issued on Sunday, April 19, and jointly signed by Board Chairman Auwal Musa Rafsanjani and Executive Director Akinbode Oluwafemi, the organisation called on government at all levels, electoral authorities, and political actors to act decisively to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy.

The statement, released in Abuja after a board meeting, emphasised that the country’s democratic stability depends not only on elections, but also on the transparency of institutions and the protection of citizens’ rights.

“Nigeria cannot afford another electoral cycle marred by irregularities, hate speech, and loss of public trust.

“The credibility of the elections will depend on the resolve of government at all levels, institutions, and political actors to uphold the rule of law,” CAPPA said.

The 2027 elections must be free, fair, and inclusive, it urged, warning that violence, voter suppression, and intimidation could erode public confidence in the process.

It urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to begin early preparations to ensure transparent elections where every vote counts, while also calling on the judiciary to resist any attempts to undermine the will of the people.

The group also raised concerns over the growing influence of money in politics, warning that vote-buying and the control of institutions by powerful interests are weakening governance and public trust.

“As Nigeria prepares for its next general elections, this is a critical moment to reset national priorities.

“The government and all stakeholders must show genuine commitment to democratic principles, economic justice, and the protection of human life. Anything less risks deepening public disillusionment,” CAPPA added.

Beyond elections, CAPPA expressed alarm over the worsening security situation across the country, noting that despite large government spending on security, many Nigerians continue to face daily threats.

“It is deeply troubling that senseless killings, kidnappings, and violent attacks persist across various parts of the country, despite the enormous public resources committed annually to security.

“Even more alarming is that ransom payments have become routine, with Nigerians forced to negotiate with violent actors in the absence of effective state protection,” CAPPA said.

The organisation called for a complete overhaul of the country’s security system, with a stronger focus on intelligence, community involvement, and justice for victims.

On the economy, CAPPA said recent reforms have not brought relief to ordinary Nigerians.

It noted that, despite the removal of fuel subsidies and increased government revenues, many citizens continue to struggle with high inflation, rising food prices, unemployment, and reduced purchasing power.

“While fiscal reforms are often necessary, they must not come at the expense of the most vulnerable.

“The expected gains from subsidy removal and increased revenues must be transparently managed and equitably distributed to create jobs and reduce poverty,” CAPPA noted.

The group urged both federal and state governments to be more accountable in managing public funds, invest in key sectors such as healthcare and education, and adopt policies that shield citizens from the harsh effects of economic changes.

It reaffirmed that it remained committed to working with civil society groups, communities, and the media to promote transparency and public participation in governance.
