FG Halts Controversial 4% FOB Customs Levy After Stakeholder Backlash

President Bola Tinubu has sacked the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, as part of a sweeping cabinet reshuffle that also removed the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Umar Dangiwa.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, announced the changes in a memo on Tuesday.

According to the directive, Edun is to hand over to Taiwo Oyedele, who has been appointed to take over as Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy.

Oyedele previously served as Minister of State for Finance.

In the same development, Muttaqha Rabe Darma has been named ministerial nominee and minister-designate for the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

The memo further instructed Dangiwa to hand over to the Minister of State in the ministry.

It stated that “all handing over and taking over processes should be completed on or before the close of business on Thursday 23rd April, 2026.”

Explaining the President’s decision, Akume said, “These changes are aimed at strengthening cohesion, synergy in governance as well as achieving more impactful delivery on the economy to Nigerians, through the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

He added that the President acted within his constitutional authority, noting that the decision was taken in line with Sections 147 and 148 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999, as amended).

The President also expressed appreciation to the outgoing ministers for their service to the nation and wished them well in their future endeavours.

Akume further conveyed the President’s assurance that “the process of reinvigoration shall be continuous.”
