The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has warned that even a monthly salary of ₦1 million would be meaningless without a stable naira and a stronger economy.
NLC President, Joe Ajaero, said workers are more concerned about the purchasing power of their income than headline salary figures, noting that rising inflation continues to erode earnings.
“Even if Nigerian workers earn ₦1 million, it will not be meaningful if the naira has no value,” he said in Abuja.
Ajaero stressed that what workers need is a currency that can sustain them and their families throughout the month, as the rising cost of food, transportation, and housing continues to worsen living conditions.

He also called on the government to urgently address inflation and rising fuel prices, warning that both have significantly increased the cost of living across the country.
On minimum wage negotiations, the NLC said discussions have not yet begun, noting that the process follows a legal timeline and will commence at the appropriate time before the current wage structure expires.
The labour leader further urged the government to strengthen Nigeria’s economic and energy systems to reduce vulnerability to global shocks.
He added that any planned Workers’ Day actions would be limited to states that have not fully implemented the approved minimum wage.
