Presidential Committee Vows Swift Overhaul of Nigeria’s Security Training Institutions

The Presidential Committee on the Overhaul and Revamp of Training Institutions for Security Agencies, chaired by Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, has promised to submit its findings and a detailed cost plan for refurbishing Nigeria’s security training facilities on time.

The committee gave this assurance on Thursday while inspecting the Nigeria Police Training School, Nonwa-Tai in Rivers State. This visit was part of a nationwide assessment of police and security training centres.

The eight-member committee, inaugurated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu under the National Economic Council, was joined by Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, and Secretary retired IGP Baba Usman.

During the inspection, the team found severe neglect at Nonwa-Tai. Buildings were dilapidated, infrastructure was vandalised, and the grounds were overgrown.

Governor Mbah told newsmen that the visit followed President Tinubu’s directive to urgently evaluate and rehabilitate all police and security training institutions.

He said, “The president knows we face a security crossroads. We need a complete and urgent overhaul. He has approved recruiting 30,000 new police officers, but we cannot start without functional training institutions.”

Mbah added that the committee aimed to ensure officers are trained in safe and well-equipped facilities that promote integrity and professionalism.

Governor Fubara called the visit a decisive step toward restoring morale and professionalism in the police force. Similarly, Governor Abiodun stressed the urgency, noting the committee has a four-week deadline to finish its work.

To cover the country efficiently, the committee divided its members into two teams: one inspecting northern centres, the other examining southern facilities.
