Imo State Police have launched a full investigation into a tragic road accident that killed 12 members of the Jehovah’s Witness community on Sunday night, September 7, along the Owerri–Onitsha Expressway.
The victims were traveling from Anambra State to Agwu village.
Police spokesperson Henry Okoye, who confirmed the incident, explained that a gas tanker driving against traffic collided with the commercial bus carrying the church members. “The deceased include eight men and four children,” Okoye said. “The bodies have been deposited at the Ogbaku Mortuary, while the injured are receiving treatment at Divine Hospital, Awo-Omamma.”

Authorities condemned the incident and called for strict compliance with traffic regulations. Okoye said the police are investigating why the tanker drove against traffic and assured the public that any negligent parties would face justice. “This tragic event underscores the dangers of traffic violations,” he said, urging drivers to exercise caution, especially at night.
Amid the tragedy, some travelers recounted miraculous escapes. Abner Aliu shared how his car somersaulted late Friday night after a wedding, yet he and two companions survived with only minor scratches. “That pillar could have crushed me or hit my head,” he said. “By the grace of God, we are alive.”

Social media was flooded with reactions as people offered prayers and thanks to God for the survivors, highlighting community solidarity in the face of road accidents.
The Imo State Police urged witnesses or anyone with information about the crash to come forward. They also warned drivers to avoid reckless behavior and pledged increased patrols along key highways to prevent similar tragedies.
