FCT Police Recover 21 AK-47 Rifles in Major Crime Crackdown in Three Months

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command recorded major security gains between October and December 2025. During the period, officers arrested 160 suspects, rescued dozens of victims and recovered a large cache of weapons, including 21 AK-47 rifles and 1,700 rounds of live ammunition.

The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Miller G. Dantawaye, disclosed this on Friday while presenting the Command’s scorecard at a press briefing in Abuja. He said the results followed a shift in policing strategy after he assumed office in October 2025.

Dantawaye noted that Abuja’s political and diplomatic status attracts both lawful residents and criminal elements. He said the Command responded with targeted, intelligence-led operations to curb kidnapping, armed robbery and “one-chance” crimes.

Kidnapping and armed robbery curbed

Police recorded seven kidnapping cases during the three months. Officers arrested 41 suspects and rescued 24 victims, including women and children, from forest hideouts within and around the FCT.

Armed robbery remained a major threat. Police handled 62 cases and arrested 38 suspects. These operations broke up several robbery gangs through raids and stop-and-search patrols.

“One-chance” robberies also drew attention. Police recorded 26 cases and arrested 12 suspects through surveillance and targeted enforcement.

The Command recorded 35 cases of car theft and vehicle snatching. Officers arrested 11 suspects and recovered 20 stolen vehicles linked to kidnapping, armed robbery and “one-chance” attacks. Some of the vehicles were recovered outside the FCT.

In total, police handled about 300 cases during the period. These included homicide, cultism, drug offences, cyber fraud and illegal possession of firearms.

Police recovered a wide range of weapons and exhibits. These included 21 AK-47 rifles, one K2 rifle, 10 shotguns, 37 locally made pistols, 31 locally fabricated firearms, four magazines and 1,700 rounds of ammunition.

Officers also seized knives, cutlasses, scaffold rods, communication devices, motorcycles and counterfeit items. Other recoveries included 86 bags of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis sativa, digital scales, ATM cards, ID cards and armoured cables found in a tinted vehicle.

Police also recovered N15.45 million in cash. Investigators linked the money to kidnapping, armed robbery and fraud.

Gun battles and sacrifices

During high-risk operations, police engaged armed suspects in gun battles. Nine suspects died during these encounters while resisting arrest or attempting to flee with hostages.

The Commissioner also confirmed that six police officers lost their lives in the line of duty during the period. He described their deaths as a painful reminder of the risks officers face daily to protect lives and property.
