A joint air operation conducted by the Nigerian military under Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) and the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has reportedly eliminated 21 suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Borno State.
The airstrike, which took place on May 30, targeted a terrorist enclave in Arege, Kukawa Local Government Area, following intelligence reports indicating the presence of insurgents in the area.
Security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, citing military sources, said the operation was launched after intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions confirmed ISWAP activities at the location.
According to the sources, the targeted camp was allegedly being used by the terrorists as a base for planning and coordinating attacks across communities in the Lake Chad region.
Military officials described the mission as intelligence-driven and carefully executed to maximise its impact on the terrorist group while disrupting its operational activities.
Terrorist Camp Destroyed
The operation reportedly resulted in the death of 21 insurgents and dealt a significant blow to ISWAP’s operations in the area.
Sources said the strike forms part of ongoing efforts by Nigerian and United States forces to dismantle terrorist networks, destroy insurgent hideouts and reduce the operational capabilities of extremist groups in the North-East.
The latest action comes amid intensified military operations aimed at preventing terrorist groups from regrouping and launching fresh attacks in vulnerable communities across the region.

Military sources noted that the successful operation underscores the growing security collaboration between Nigeria and its international partners in the fight against terrorism.
They expressed optimism that sustained intelligence-sharing and coordinated operations would further weaken insurgent activities around the Lake Chad Basin, where terrorist groups have continued attempts to re-establish their presence.
According to the sources, the joint strike represents another step in ongoing efforts to restore security and stability in the North-East and deny terrorist groups the ability to operate freely within the region.
