The federal government has dismissed claims that it increased the pump price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), clarifying that recent adjustments were made by private investors.
In a statement on Thursday, the Brands and Corporate Communications Manager of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), Matilda Johnson, described reports attributing price hikes to government directives as “misleading”.

“It must also be emphasised that the recent pump price adjustments announced by certain operators are purely private-sector decisions and not the outcome of any government directive or policy,” the PCNGI said.
The initiative stressed that the federal government has neither removed subsidies nor issued any directive to alter CNG prices. Instead, its mandate, as directed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is to expand the CNG mobility market and promote the adoption of cleaner, cheaper, and more sustainable alternatives to petrol and diesel.

According to the statement, the CNG sector has already attracted nearly $1 billion in private investments, reflecting investor confidence in its growth potential.
The government assured Nigerians that CNG would remain significantly cheaper and more environmentally friendly than petrol and diesel, pledging to deepen nationwide penetration and strengthen private sector participation to ensure availability and affordability.
