Ex-Libyan Leader’s Son, Seif al-Islam Gadhafi, Killed

Seif al-Islam Gadhafi, the son of former Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi, has been killed in the town of Zintan, Libyan officials confirmed on Tuesday.

The exact circumstances of his death remain unclear, but local media reports say he was shot by armed men at his home.

Born in June 1972, Seif al-Islam earned a PhD from the London School of Economics and was viewed as the reformist face of the Gadhafi regime.

His father, Muammar Gadhafi, ruled Libya for over 40 years before being toppled and killed in 2011 during a NATO-backed uprising that sparked a civil war.

Seif al-Islam was captured while trying to flee to Niger after the uprising. Fighters released him in June 2017, and he has been living in Zintan since then.

A Libyan court sentenced him to death in absentia in 2015 for inciting violence and killing protesters. He was also wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity linked to the 2011 uprising.
