Nestle has clarified that its infant formula produced and distributed in Nigeria is not part of the batches recalled in some countries.
Pinnacle Daily reports that the Swiss multinational food and beverage company recently recalled some batches of its infant nutrition products, including SMA, BEBA and NAN formulas, in countries mainly in Europe, some parts of South America, Africa and Asia.
The initial recall in December 2025 was reportedly prompted by the suspicion of the presence of cereulide, a toxin produced by some strains of Bacillus cereus, which can cause food poisoning, leading to nausea and vomiting.
According to a Food Safety News report, the problem was detected during a self-monitoring test at Nestlé’s Nunspeet plant in the Netherlands.
Subsequently, a detailed investigation revealed that cereulide was detected in one of the raw materials from a supplier used in production, prompting an expanded recall to halt further distribution of the affected products.
Britain’s Food Standards Agency explained that the toxin “is unlikely to be deactivated or destroyed by cooking, using boiling water or when making the infant milk.”

Following concerns raised by the recall, Nestle Nigeria, in a statement released on Friday, January 9, said its Infant Formula products registered with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and sold in Nigeria are not affected by the recall.
“We would like to clarify that Infant Formula sold by Nestlé Nigeria is not part of the voluntary and precautionary recall of specific batches of Infant Formula announced in some countries,” the company stated in a statement signed by its Corporate Affairs Manager in Nigeria, Toju Egbebi.
“We want to emphasize that the Nestlé Infant Formula products sold by Nestlé Nigeria and officially registered with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) are not affected by this recall.”

It reassured that “all SMA (SMA Gold 1, SMA Gold 2 and SMA Gold 3) and NAN product ranges (NAN Optipro 1, NAN Optipro 2 and NAN Optipro 3) sold by Nestlé Nigeria are safe for consumption.”
The food and beverage conglomerate added that it prioritises the safety and quality of its products, and the health of babies consuming the infant foods.
