Speaking at the two-day COP-30 Follow-Up Action Meeting and the unveiling of the hub, the Chief Executive Officer of Haitong Nigeria Limited and Executive Vice-Chairman of BYD Nigeria, Chief Moses Ayom, said the project was in response to the commitments made at the recently concluded UN 30th climate conference in Belém, Brazil.

The event, organised by BYD Nigeria and Haitong in partnership with the Grassroots Centre for Rights and Civic Orientation, focused on translating international climate pledges into local action. Ayom said the new fast-charging hub capable of fully powering an electric vehicle in 40 minutes would serve government agencies, private businesses, and individuals.

“Practical action speaks louder than words. We are investing in structures and infrastructure that will transform mobility and empower our people,” he said.
He added that the facility would also support skills development, technology transfer, and job creation for young Nigerians in EV retail, servicing, and maintenance. The centre will additionally function as a training hub for technicians.
Describing COP-30 as the “COP of truth,” Ayom said climate action must now move beyond rhetoric into implementation, with a focus on ensuring that vulnerable communities are not sidelined in the global transition.
He applauded President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the FCT’s smart-city strategy, saying both provide clear policy direction for investors committed to climate-friendly innovation. He stressed that addressing the climate crisis requires a “whole-of-society” approach beyond government efforts alone.
The Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change, Mrs Omotenioye Majekodunmi, represented by Jummai Vandu, said the project aligns with Nigeria’s climate obligations and the world’s renewed commitment to low-emissions transportation.
“At COP-30, the world agreed that transforming the transport sector is non-negotiable if we must keep the 1.5°C goal alive,” she said.
She added that the hub advances renewable-energy integration, green industrialisation, and the creation of green jobs needed for a just transition.
Also speaking, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Shehu Mohammed, represented by Chief Route Commander Christopher Eya praised BYD Nigeria for developing EV-charging technology compatible with all brands of electric vehicles.

He described the Climate-Smart EV Recharge Hub as a modern, clean-energy-powered facility designed to reduce pollution in both urban and rural environments.
“Electric vehicles are encouraged because they eliminate pollutants associated with exhaust emissions,” he said.
