The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has criticised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Convention held in Ibadan at the weekend, describing it as a “carnival of shame, lawlessness and impunity.”

In a statement issued on Sunday, the APC Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, faulted the decision of the faction loyal to Governor Seyi Makinde to proceed with the exercise despite several court orders directing that the event be suspended.

Court Orders Ignored

The APC said delegates from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory gathered in Ibadan to elect new national officers in defiance of subsisting judicial directives.

Sadare accused Governor Makinde of orchestrating the event “in total disregard for the rule of law” and allegedly compelling residents and transport operators to endure hardship.

Alleged Mobilisation of Transport Workers

According to the party, commercial drivers and motorcyclists were forced to withdraw their services and assemble at the convention venue to create an impression of a large turnout.

“PDP has been synonymous with impunity, and this played out again when a group within the party ignored the judiciary to stage an illegal procession in Ibadan,” the statement read.

The APC claimed the governor’s actions confirmed fears that he intended to “ruin the umbrella party completely” while allegedly failing to address governance issues in the state.

Disregard for Protests, Residents’ Hardship

The opposition party in the state further criticised Makinde for allegedly ignoring protesters aggrieved over the demolition of their properties along the proposed Ibadan Circular Road corridor.

Instead of attending to their concerns, the APC said the governor compounded residents’ difficulties by removing commercial vehicles, motorcycles and tricycles from major roads “to paint a picture of a successful convention.”

LG Funds Allegedly Used to Finance Convention

The APC also alleged that part of the September allocations to the 33 local government councils in Oyo State was used to finance what it described as a “jamboree,” claiming many PDP governors reportedly declined to make expected financial contributions.

It warned that every kobo of public funds allegedly spent “on the failed PDP project” would be accounted for in due time.

‘Beginning of PDP’s Burial’

According to the statement, the “kangaroo convention” marked “the beginning of the burial of the PDP,” alleging that Makinde and “his few co-travellers have chosen cremation over interment for their party upon its inevitable death.”

The APC advised the warring factions within the PDP to reconcile and “prepare for possible relevance in the 2031 general elections since they have already lost 2027.”
