Jonathan Only Southerner Who Can Defeat Tinubu – Adeyanju

By Rafiyat Sadiq

Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju says former President Goodluck Jonathan is the only southern politician capable of defeating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

In a post on X, Adeyanju said Jonathan still has the constitutional right to contest for another four-year term but expressed doubt that the former leader would challenge Tinubu. “GEJ is the only southern candidate that can defeat Tinubu, but I don’t think he will run,” he wrote.

He argued that Nigeria’s laws do not allow legislation targeting a specific individual, insisting that Jonathan is not barred from contesting.

Adeyanju also claimed that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi relied heavily on church networks to secure about six million votes in the 2023 election. He said such an approach should not be repeated in 2027.

According to him, Tinubu, who ran on a Muslim-Muslim ticket, did not visit mosques to canvass for votes. “This was how the church secured six million votes for Obi in 2023. We will not sit by and allow religious bigots to rewrite history,” he wrote.

Adeyanju added that he could not respect any politician who campaigned on religious lines in a multi-religious country, stressing that religion should not be used to divide voters.
