President Tinubu Mourns Peter Rufai

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mourned the death of former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai, who passed away at the age of 61. Rufai, fondly known as “Dodomayana”, was one of Nigeria’s most celebrated football legends.

In a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu extended his condolences to the Rufai family, the Nigerian football community, and fans across Africa.

Peter Rufai’s Legacy in Nigerian Football

President Tinubu described Peter Rufai as a patriotic sportsman who made historic contributions to Nigerian football, especially during the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Tunisia, where Nigeria won the championship.

“I recall with fond memories the heroic contributions of Peter Rufai in the historic victory of the Super Eagles at the 1994 AFCON and at Nigeria’s first FIFA World Cup appearance in the USA in 1994,” the president said.

Rufai also represented Nigeria at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, cementing his legacy as one of the most dependable goalkeepers in Africa.

A Trailblazer in European Football

Peter Rufai began his professional career with Stationery Stores of Lagos in 1980. He was one of the first Nigerian goalkeepers to play professionally in Europe, featuring for clubs in Belgium, Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands. His international career helped pave the way for many young Nigerian footballers seeking opportunities abroad.

After retiring from professional football, Rufai founded the Staruf Football Academy in Lagos. As a prince of the royal house in Idimu, Lagos, he used the platform to mentor and nurture the next generation of Nigerian footballers.

President Tinubu’s Tribute

“Peter Rufai brought honour to Nigeria and inspired countless young athletes. His contribution to the growth of football in Nigeria and Africa will never be forgotten.”

The President prayed for the peaceful repose of Rufai’s soul and for comfort to his family and all who mourn his loss.
