France Calls for Calm ahead of World Cup Quarter-final against Morocco

The French government has appealed to football fans to celebrate responsibly as France prepares to face African champions Morocco in Thursday’s World Cup quarter-final, amid heightened security over fears of possible unrest.

French authorities said security forces would be on alert across the country during the match, scheduled to kick off at 10:00 p.m. local time (20:00 GMT).

France’s Sports Minister, Marina Ferrari, urged supporters to ensure the occasion remains peaceful.

“I appeal to everyone’s sense of responsibility. It has to remain a celebration,” she said in an interview with France Info.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez also warned that authorities would take a firm stance against any disorder.

“No misconduct will be tolerated,” he said.

Historic ties add significance

Morocco, which gained independence from France in 1956, maintains close historical and cultural ties with the former colonial power, where hundreds of thousands of Moroccans and French citizens of Moroccan descent reside.

Several members of Morocco’s national team were born in France and currently play for French clubs, while captain Achraf Hakimi, born in Spain, plays for Paris Saint-Germain.
