Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles suffered a narrow 1–0 loss to Senegal in their opening Group D clash at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
The match, played on Tuesday evening at the Amani Stadium, was decided by a second-half goal from Christian Gomis.
In the aftermath, head coach Eric Chelle identified three critical areas that demand urgent attention: mentality, competitiveness, and aggression.
Speaking during his post-match press conference, Chelle admitted that the team lacked the drive needed to perform at this level. He emphasised the need for a sharper mindset and a stronger presence on the pitch.
“We need to improve our state of mind. We need to be more competitive and more aggressive,” Chelle said. “We will see.”
This defeat leaves Nigeria with no points, increasing the pressure as they prepare to face Sudan next Tuesday. Victory in that game is essential if they are to keep qualification hopes alive.

Their final Group D match will be against Congo, which could ultimately determine whether the team progresses to the knockout stage.
Although the performance against Senegal showed moments of promise, Chelle knows his side must respond with urgency and intent in the matches ahead.
