PDP Slams APC Chairman’s Claim of Reclaiming Plateau Governorship in 2027

Convention: PDP Governors Close Ranks, Promise Fair Contest in Ibadan

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau State has dismissed the claim by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, that his party will install a governor in the state during the 2027 general elections.

Professor Yilwatda had made the statement on a live radio programme in Jos on Tuesday, but the PDP described his comments as unrealistic and out of touch with the political mood in the state.

The PDP State Publicity Secretary, Jonathan Amande, said only the people of Plateau, not a political leader or party hierarchy, have the power to decide who governs them.

“While Professor Nentawe is free to express his opinion, producing the next governor of Plateau requires more than ambition and rhetoric,” Amande stated.

He noted that the PDP remains firmly rooted in Plateau politics, pointing to its resilience, wide structures across all local government wards, and what he described as a proven record of governance under Governor Caleb Mutfwang.

According to him, leadership is not about personal aspiration but about broad acceptance and the capacity to win the trust of the people.

“These are qualities the PDP has consistently shown through inclusive governance and people-centred policies,” he said.

Looking ahead to 2027, the party stressed its commitment to unity, democratic growth, and policies that directly improve livelihoods.

It pledged to strengthen internal cohesion, deepen citizen engagement, and ensure fairness, accountability, and service delivery in its dealings with the electorate.

“Our focus is to consolidate on democratic gains, work closely with the people, and ensure more progress and development in Plateau,” Amande added.

The PDP also called on members and supporters to remain confident, insisting the party is prepared to earn the people’s mandate again in the 2027 polls.

While acknowledging Professor Yilwatda’s role as a stakeholder in Plateau politics, the party urged him to recognise that true leadership goes beyond ambition and requires broad-based acceptance.
