Tinubu Forwards State Police Bill to Reps for Constitutional Amendment

President Bola Tinubu has transmitted the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Alteration) (State Police) Bill, 2026, to the House of Representatives, seeking constitutional approval for the establishment of state police across the country.

The bill was conveyed in a letter read on the floor of the House during Tuesday’s plenary.

According to the President, the proposed legislation seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to provide the legal framework for the creation of state police as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture.

Tinubu said the bill builds on earlier legislative work by the House of Representatives and includes additional safeguards to ensure the effective operation of a dual policing system involving the Federal Government and the states.

He said the proposed framework is intended to address the country’s evolving security challenges through a more responsive and efficient policing structure.

The President described the bill as a key component of his administration’s security reform agenda and urged lawmakers to give it speedy consideration and passage.

The move comes about two weeks after the Senate passed a similar constitutional amendment bill seeking the establishment of state police across the federation after securing the support of more than two-thirds of senators.

If approved by the House of Representatives and endorsed by the required number of state Houses of Assembly, the bill will provide the constitutional basis for the establishment of state police services as part of efforts to tackle insecurity across the country.
