Tinubu, Akpabio Mourns Segun Awolowo, Describe Death as National Loss

President Bola Tinubu has described the death of Segun Awolowo at 62 as a profound loss to the family and the country.

In a statement issued late Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President said Segun Awolowo lived a life defined by integrity, distinction, and service, adding that he upheld the ideals and dignity associated with his grandfather, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who was a nationalist.

“Segun exemplified the Awolowo pedigree in appearance, character and demeanour,” Tinubu said, noting that his contributions would be remembered with honour.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has also described Awolowo’s death as a heavy blow to the Yoruba race and to Nigeria.

In a statement released by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, Akpabio said the news of the death of the grandson of Chief Obafemi Awolowo came to him as a shock.

“I am in shock. But who are we to question the decision of our Creator? He determines when we arrive and when we depart,” he said.

Akpabio praised Awolowo as a brilliant lawyer whose achievements inspired many Nigerians. He extended condolences to the Awolowo family of Ikenne, Ogun State, Governor Dapo Abiodun and the people of the state, describing the loss as irreplaceable.

He added that Awolowo’s legacy as a dedicated professional, devoted family man and compassionate citizen would endure.

“On behalf of the people of Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District and the 10th Senate, I pray that his soul rests in perfect peace and that his family, friends and associates find strength in the cherished memories he leaves behind,” Akpabio said.

“He was a devoted servant to Nigeria, dedicating his life to the service of his country with vision, integrity, passion, and steadfast commitment,” the statement added. “He was a true family man, a loyal friend, a devoted servant of God, and a deeply remarkable human being.”

The family further noted that Olusegun Awolowo loved his family, his work, and his country, and lived every day with purpose, humility, and a generous spirit that touched all who knew him.
