Threats Won’t Silence Me, Says VDM After Criticising Northern Leaders

Social media activist, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has alleged that he has been receiving threats following his recent criticism of political leadership and governance challenges in Northern Nigeria.

The activist made the claim in a video posted on his official social media page, where he expressed concern over what he described as hostile reactions from some individuals to comments he made about the state of development in the region.

According to VDM, some Northern influencers and other individuals have taken issue with his remarks, with some allegedly sending threatening messages and even calling for violence against him.

“I see some Northern/Arewa influencers are asking for my head because of the video I made yesterday. Some are in my DMs dropping threats,” he said.

Despite the alleged threats, VeryDarkMan maintained that he was not intimidated and could travel freely to any part of Northern Nigeria without fear.

He stressed that his comments were never aimed at ordinary residents of the region but were directed at political leaders whom he believes have failed to address longstanding developmental challenges in the region.

The activist argued that the North’s persistent struggles with insecurity, poverty, unemployment and limited economic opportunities should be blamed on poor governance rather than the people themselves.

“The northern part of Nigeria is holding Nigeria back because the politicians made it so. I am not blaming the people, I am blaming the government for doing that to its people,” he stated.

Praises Northerners, Blames Leadership

VDM described Northern Nigerians as hardworking, honest and resilient people who have been let down by those entrusted with leadership responsibilities.

According to him, many of the social and economic difficulties confronting communities across the region are the result of years of governance failures and inadequate policy implementation.

He insisted that political leaders, rather than citizens, should be held accountable for the challenges facing the region.

The activist also criticised what he described as ineffective empowerment initiatives, citing a recent programme in Kano State where plates were reportedly distributed to beneficiaries.

He questioned the value of such interventions, arguing that they do little to address poverty or create sustainable economic opportunities.

“I wonder why the Kano State governor was doing an empowerment programme and he was sharing plates. That’s not empowerment, that’s empowering poverty,” he said.

VeryDarkMan further alleged that insecurity has continued to disrupt farming activities in several parts of Northern Nigeria, worsening economic hardship and limiting productivity.

He urged critics to channel their energy toward demanding accountability from elected officials and addressing the issues affecting communities across the region.

According to him, public anger should be directed at political leaders responsible for governance rather than individuals drawing attention to the challenges.

“You’re having a fight with VDM when you should be fighting with the politicians,” he said.

The activist’s remarks have continued to generate debate on social media, with supporters arguing that his comments highlight genuine governance concerns, while critics maintain that his views unfairly portray the region and its leadership.
