TCN Restores Power Supply After Flooding Triggered Outage in Parts of Lagos

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has restored power supply to parts of Lagos following a major outage caused by severe flooding that submerged critical equipment at two key transmission substations.

The company had declared force majeure on Oworoshoki 132/33kV and Lekki 330/132kV Transmission Substations after persistent rainfall triggered widespread blackouts in several communities served by the facilities.

TCN confirmed that the Oworonshoki 132/33kV Transmission Substation was completely knocked out of service after floodwaters affected two power transformers—TR1 (60 MVA) and TR3 (30 MVA)—which tripped on no load and could not be restored despite repeated attempts by engineers. The protection and control cables of the transformers remained submerged, complicating restoration efforts as rain continued to fall.

The company stated that while the Oworonshoki facility was offline, the Lekki 330/132kV Transmission Substation remained in service, with engineers continuously pumping out floodwater to prevent a similar shutdown.

The outage affected customers of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (Eko DisCo) and Ikeja Electric.

In a public notice issued on Tuesday, Ikeja Electric listed the impacted feeders, which included Ladilac, Bariga, Alapere, Oworo, Gbagada, Pedro, GTB, Anthony, Agboyi, Ifako, Araba, Hospital, and Bakare.

The disruption highlighted the vulnerability of critical power infrastructure to extreme weather events in low-lying areas of Lagos.

TCN assured the public that engineers worked around the clock to evacuate floodwater and restore the affected transformers. Power has since been restored to the affected areas.

The company apologized for the inconvenience caused to electricity consumers and urged patience during the restoration process.

In a statement released on Wednesday, signed by its General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, TCN said the TR1 60MVA transformer at the Oworonshoki Transmission Substation was restored on Tuesday night.

“Power supply has now been restored to Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) for onward distribution to customers within the affected axis, as all feeders radiating from the station are now back in service,” part of the statement from TCN stated.

It assures the public of its continued commitment to maintaining a reliable and stable transmission network.

Several parts of Lagos have experienced flooding in the past two weeks due to continuous heavy rainfall.

Apart from power supply, the flooding has also submerged homes, disrupted transportation, businesses and other economic activities across the state.
