Former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He announced his defection on Sunday at his residence in Kano.
Shekarau governed Kano State from 2003 to 2011 under the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).
He joined the PDP in 2014 after the ANPP merged with other parties to form the APC.
In 2018, he left the PDP for the APC but later defected in May 2022 to the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) following a prolonged leadership dispute with former Kano governor, Abdullahi Ganduje.
By August 2022, Shekarau returned to the PDP from the NNPP.
Addressing his supporters, the former governor said the decision followed extensive consultations and careful consideration of his political options.
“We have weighed all the options and arrived at this collective resolution. Do you all agree?” he said, asking anyone opposed to the move to speak up.
In a resignation letter dated April 19, 2026, and addressed to the PDP chairman of Giginyu Ward in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, Shekarau said his exit from the party takes immediate effect.
Reacting, Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, expressed delight in Shekarau’s return to APC, stating that the move would further strengthen the party’s position in the state ahead of future elections.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, Governor Yusuf said the party would fix a date for the formal reception of the ex-governor into the APC fold.
“The party in Kano continues to witness growing support and consolidation, positioning itself as the most dominant political force in the state,” he stated.
While expressing confidence that APC is ready to contest and win all elective positions in the 2027 election, the governor called on party members to remain united and committed to mobilizing support, especially at the grassroots.
