Crowds gathered in Minneapolis on Wednesday to protest and hold a vigil for a woman shot dead during an immigration enforcement operation, as anger mounted over federal officers’ use of force.
The 37-year-old woman was shot in the head by an ICE officer in a snowy residential neighbourhood south of downtown. Federal authorities described the shooting as an act of self-defence, but Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called it “reckless” and unnecessary.

The incident, captured on video by witnesses, occurred just blocks from historic immigrant markets and about a mile from where George Floyd was killed by police in 2020. Hundreds of protesters returned later in the day for a vigil.
Demonstrators chanted slogans such as “ICE out of Minnesota” and “No Trump, no troops”, while some blocked streets with cars and makeshift barricades.
Protesters also confronted local and federal officers, including senior Border Patrol official Gregory Bovino, blowing whistles and shouting as official vehicles passed.

The killing highlights a sharp escalation in immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump, marking at least the fifth death linked to recent crackdowns. Authorities have deployed more than 2,000 federal officers to the Twin Cities, with hundreds of arrests already reported.
