Nigeria is set to sign more than 30 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Brazil during a landmark three-day state visit by Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin. The visit marks the Second Session of the Nigeria–Brazil Strategic Dialogue Mechanism (SDM), aimed at deepening bilateral ties between the two largest economies in Africa and Latin America.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), as Alckmin arrived in Abuja for the high-level engagement.

Wide-Ranging Agreements

The MoUs are expected to cover key sectors including:

  • Defence and security cooperation

  • Agricultural technology and food security

  • Energy transition and infrastructure

  • Trade facilitation and industrial development

  • Cultural and educational exchange programmes

Officials say the agreements are designed to support Nigeria’s development goals under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Strengthening South-South Partnerships

Speaking at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport to welcome the Brazilian delegation, Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, described the visit as a pivotal step in Nigeria’s global engagement strategy.

“This dialogue mechanism reflects our commitment to productive South-South partnerships,” Hadejia said. “Brazil’s strengths in agribusiness, energy, and industry align perfectly with Nigeria’s development priorities.”

Alckmin was received by top Nigerian officials, including:

  • Senator Ibrahim Hadejia

  • Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole

  • Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha

  • Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari

High-Level Engagements

Vice President Kashim Shettima will host the visiting Vice President throughout his stay, which includes: A joint opening of the Strategic Dialogue at the State House Conference Centre, a press briefing by the Foreign Ministers of both countries and a state dinner in honour of the Brazilian delegation

A Turning Point in Nigeria–Brazil Relations

Observers see the visit as a potential game-changer in Nigeria–Brazil relations, with strong prospects for increased trade, investment, and technology exchange.

The Strategic Dialogue Mechanism, established to enhance long-term cooperation, is part of Nigeria’s broader efforts to secure meaningful global partnerships that drive sustainable development.
