The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has passed a bill establishing a legal framework to tackle the growing challenges of climate change in the state.
The bill, sponsored by Mohammed Adamu Omadefu, was passed on Monday during plenary at the Assembly complex in Lafia.
Announcing the passage, Speaker Danladi Jatau said the legislation marks a major step toward incorporating environmental sustainability into all sectors of the state’s economy.

According to him, the new law will help strengthen policies and ensure that development projects across Nasarawa align with climate-friendly practices.
Governor to chair climate advisory committee
The bill provides for the establishment of a Climate Change Advisory Committee, to be chaired by the state governor.
The committee will coordinate climate-related policies, design adaptation strategies, and guide ministries and agencies on sustainable environmental management.
Speaker Jatau directed the Clerk of the House to prepare a clean copy of the bill and forward it to Governor Abdullahi Sule for his assent.

The Assembly also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting laws and policies that protect the environment and promote sustainable development in the state.
Background
Nasarawa State faces growing environmental threats linked to climate change, including rising temperatures, irregular rainfall and flood.
These conditions have continued to affect farming activities, which form the backbone of the state’s economy.
In several local government areas, particularly in Awe, Doma, Keffi, and Karu, farmlands have suffered from flooding and land degradation, while communities in the northern parts experience water shortages.
