Lagos is preparing to make history as it hosts the continent’s first-ever E1 Electric Powerboat Championship from October 3 to 5, 2025, in Victoria Island.
The Lagos State Government and the organisers of the E1 Series confirmed their readiness, promising a world-class event that will bring together more than 250 international sports personalities.
The E1 Lagos GP will place the city alongside global hosts such as Monaco, Venice, and Jeddah. More than a race, the event symbolises Lagos’ growing role in clean energy adoption, climate action, tourism, and marine innovation.
“This is a milestone for Lagos and for Africa,” organisers said. “The E1 Series is not just sport; it is sustainability in action.”

E1 Series CEO Rodi Basso explained that Lagos competed with other major cities to secure the hosting rights. He noted that the competition would attract global investors while showcasing cutting-edge marine technology.
“While oceans remain one of nature’s most challenging environments, the boating industry is redesigning and innovating for sustainability. The E1 Series shows how boats can use alternative power and new architecture to minimise environmental impact,” Basso said.
Nine international teams, including those backed by Didier Drogba and Will Smith, are confirmed for the Lagos GP.
Sam Egube, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said the event would highlight Lagos’ economic and cultural vibrancy.
“For Lagos, the City of Aquatic Splendour, this is proof of capacity. It merges speed, sustainability, and innovation while boosting tourism, commerce, and global prestige,” Egube stated.

Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, added that the event would encourage wider use of waterways. He revealed that the state’s Omi Eko Project will soon unveil 72 electric boats to improve water transport and reduce road congestion.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, reaffirmed that the event aligns with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ agenda for sustainable growth.
Veteran sports journalists also hailed Lagos for securing the championship, describing it as a step toward cementing the city as Africa’s investment and sports capital.
